Letting Go, All at Once: The Reality of College Move-In

There are very few weekends in life that hit you from every angle—logistically, emotionally, physically—all at once. Moving your first child into college is one of them.
It’s exciting. It’s overwhelming. It’s joyful. It’s disorienting. And somehow, it all happens in a matter of hours.
As a parent who has lived it, here are 10 things I wish every family truly understood before move-in weekend.
___________________________________________________________________________________________
🗺️ Do your homework before you arrive
Know the campus layout—dorms, parking, dining halls, check-in locations
Review move-in instructions carefully—time slots, routes, restrictions
Identify where to unload vs. where to park—this alone reduces stress dramatically
Have a loose game plan, so you’re not figuring it out in the moment
___________________________________________________________________________________________
🎒 Pack less than you think you need
Dorm rooms are smaller than expected
You don’t need duplicates of everything
Overpacking creates stress during move-in and clutter afterward
You can always buy what you’re missing later

📦 Amazon is both your friend and your enemy
The pre-college “add to cart” spiral is real—boxes will arrive daily, creating a false sense that everything can be solved instantly, but college life doesn’t work like 1-day shipping
Making friends, finding routines, feeling comfortable—these take time to develop
They don’t come with a Prime membership; they are built slowly

📱 Social media: Connection vs. Comparison
Before moving in, social media is incredibly helpful for finding roommates, connecting with other freshmen, checking out different clubs and organizations, and learning logistics and tips from parents
But once school starts, it can become misleading
“Best week ever” posts aren’t the full story
“Instant friend groups” are often curated moments
Reality: Most students are still figuring things out behind the scenes
___________________________________________________________________________________________
🤝 No one has it figured out yet
Despite appearances, everyone is starting from scratch
Even the most confident-looking students are unsure
The playing field has been reset for all students
___________________________________________________________________________________________
🗓️ No schedule = no structure = no bueno
Free time sounds great… until there’s too much of it
Early move-in or long gaps before classes can be overwhelming
Students go from structured days to nothing overnight
That lack of structure leads to anxiety and constant “What do I do now?” moments
Encourage students to:
Attend Welcome events
Explore campus
Create small routines early

💬 Putting yourself out there is hard
Walking up to strangers and introducing yourself is uncomfortable
Joining conversations takes courage
Rejection (or perceived rejection) happens
Talking to unfamiliar people is the way connections begin
Growth happens right outside of your comfort zone
___________________________________________________________________________________________
😴 It’s more exhausting than you expect
Physically: lifting, walking, unpacking, organizing
Mentally: constant decision-making and stimulation
Emotionally: pride, sadness, excitement, anxiety—all at once
Everyone is running on adrenaline… until they crash
___________________________________________________________________________________________
🎓 From the top of the world to starting over
Teens go from confident senior leaders… to brand new freshmen
From knowing everyone… to knowing no one
From being the “expert”… to figuring everything out again
It’s a humbling—and necessary—reset
___________________________________________________________________________________________
⏳ “Best four years of your life”… eventually
That phrase creates unrealistic expectations
The first few weeks are often the hardest
Loneliness
Uncertainty
Adjustment stress
The magic builds over time—not instantly
The students who thrive are the ones who stay patient through the uncomfortable beginning

Final Thought
Move-in weekend isn’t just about setting up a dorm room. It’s about watching your child step into a completely new version of their life—one where you’re no longer the constant.
It’s messy. It’s emotional. It’s beautiful.
And if it is overwhelming, that doesn’t mean something is wrong.
It means something big is happening. Jamie Kideckel recently experienced the joy, challenges, and emotions of moving her freshman daughter into college. She shares her firsthand perspective to help other parents navigate the transition with confidence.
