Summer Isn't a Sprint: How to Make Meaningful Progress - Without Missing the Fun

Summer often arrives with a mix of excitement and uncertainty. For rising seniors especially, it can feel like the calm before the storm: one last stretch of freedom before senior year, college applications, and a very busy fall.

The good news? Summer doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing choice between relaxing and working on applications. With the right approach, summer can be a season of both progress and joy.

Why Summer Matters So Much for Rising Seniors

Once senior year begins, time fills quickly—classes, activities, leadership roles, games, performances, and social milestones. Waiting until September to begin applications often means writing essays late at night, under pressure, and alongside everything else.

Using the summer strategically changes that experience entirely.

A realistic and healthy goal for rising seniors is to:

  • Draft and revise the Common App “Personal Essay”

  • Finalize a balanced college list

  • Identify and start brainstorming supplemental essays for all ED/EA schools after August 1st

Reaching these milestones before September doesn’t just reduce stress—it gives students the freedom to actually enjoy senior year.

🌟 For Rising Seniors: Progress Now, Freedom Later

Summer is the best time to do your deepest thinking and writing. Without daily homework or packed schedules, you have space to reflect—and to write thoughtfully instead of reactively.

Here’s what productive (but balanced) progress can look like:

  • Brainstorming and drafting your personal essay early, then revising over time

  • Researching top-choice schools and outlining responses to their specific essays

  • Using summer experiences—travel, camp, jobs, volunteering—as authentic, fresh material for essays

You don’t need to write nonstop. In fact, breaks often make your writing stronger. The goal is steady progress, not burnout.

When fall arrives, you’ll be able to focus on enjoying senior traditions, friendships, and milestones—not scrambling to meet deadlines.

🌱 For Rising Juniors: Explore and Take Notes

While applications are still a year away, summer is a valuable time to notice patterns:

  • What experiences energize you?

  • What challenges push you to grow?

  • What moments feel meaningful or memorable?

Keeping informal notes now makes future essay brainstorming much easier—and helps you make smarter choices during junior year.

🌿 For Underclassmen: Follow Curiosity (Without Pressure)

Freshmen and sophomores should use the summer to explore freely. Camps, creative projects, reading, jobs, internships, and volunteering all help students learn what excites them. There’s no need to optimize—just pay attention.

💬 For Families

Summer support means helping students balance structure and rest. Encouraging consistent—but reasonable—progress while protecting downtime helps students stay motivated without feeling overwhelmed. Summer memories matter, too.
